Representatives from Ciment Català participated on June 25th in Barcelona in the annual meeting of the Aggregates Working Group, where key sector data and prospects were analysed. These prospects are marked by increased production, the growth of recycled aggregates, and forecasts of moderate demand growth. The meeting, held at the offices of the Administrative District of the Government of Catalonia, was attended by representatives from the various entities, organizations, and institutions that comprise this sector monitoring body.
During the session, the main activity data for 2025 were presented. Aggregate production registered a 3.88% increase compared to the previous year, a positive trend expected to continue throughout 2026. In contrast, aggregate consumption for cement manufacturing decreased by 5% during this period.
The meeting also served to analyse the progress of the restoration of mining areas, which continues to advance steadily. Currently, Catalonia has 5,572 hectares restored. It was also reported that the Catalan Government, in collaboration with CREAF (Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications), is continuing its study of abandoned mining activities awaiting restoration, with the aim of assessing the possibilities for recovering these areas.
In the area of the circular economy, the legal obligation to incorporate at least 5% recycled aggregates in both public and private works was reiterated. Catalonia currently has 61 fixed and 29 mobile aggregate recycling plants, which allow for the recovery of nearly two million tons of this material annually.
Finally, demand forecasts for the entire construction sector were presented, encompassing residential and non-residential construction, civil engineering, and renovation. Estimates point to an approximate growth of 2% in 2026, consolidating the prospects for the sector’s recovery.
