Energy Consumption
The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to the stoppage of activities and a lower demand for cement due to the various confinements of the population decreed by the government, led to a decrease in the energy consumption of Catalan factories. In 2020, the last year with available data, the use of both fossil fuels (-10%) and those partially containing biomass (-30%) decreased. The good news was the slight increase (5%) of alternative biomass fuels, which contribute to the carbon neutrality of the sector.
Given the diversity of fuels consumed, the measure used to homogenise magnitudes is the joule (J), a unit of energy, heat quantity and work in the International System of Units. It is a derived unit defined as the work done by a force of one newton when the point where it is applied moves one metre in the direction of the force. In reality, and due to high consumption, the gigajoule (GJ), which corresponds to one billion joules, is used in cement factories.
