Significant reduction in the use of energy of fossil origin
Energy efficiency is one of the main levers used by cement factories to further improve their environmental performance. This strategy led to a 7% decrease in the volume of fuels used in 2021 (last year with figures available). The news is even better if one takes into account that the use of the most polluting fuels (derived from oil and other fossil fuels) fell even further (-10%).
The path taken by the Catalan cement sector towards carbon neutrality in the sector is reflected in the continued decline in the consumption of fossil fuels, which has fallen by 19% in just 2 years, reaching 7.77 GJ. In energy matters, and given the diversity of fuels that are consumed, the measure used to homogenize the magnitudes is the joule (symbol J), a unit of energy, amount of heat and work in the International System of units. It is a derived unit that is defined as the work that a force of one newton does when the point where it is applied moves one meter in the direction of the force. Actually, and because of the large consumption, in cement factories the gigajoule (GJ) is used, which corresponds to a billion joules.
