9% drop in the Catalan market
The string of 9 consecutive months (from April to December) of declines in cement consumption meant that cement consumption closed the year with a 9% decrease and a total of 2.14 million tons. These figures confirm the significant drop in the sector's activity after two years of post-pandemic recovery, and place it in a complex situation.
The contraction of the sector in the year 2023 must be attributed, above all, to the lack of investment in infrastructure by public administrations, which is essential for maintaining the quality of life, the sustainability of society and the natural environment. Citizens are paying a very high price for this lack of construction and maintenance of public facilities, which has been evident for some years now.
Examples include the problems experienced in mobility, with road congestion and rail incidents, in the supply of social housing or in the setbacks in water supply due to drought, which could have been avoided, at least partially, with infrastructures that were planned long ago but not built.
