Foreign market
For the fourth consecutive year, cement exports from Catalan factories have fallen. In the last year, the fall of 21% leaves foreign sales volumeat unseen levelssince 2013. The 1.8 million tons exported are only the result of the loss of competitiveness of the industry, burdened by the high cost of electricity (the second most expensive in Europe) and the high price of CO2 emission allowances, which have been around 30 euros per ton throughout the year.
It should be borne in mind that Catalan plants, subject to the market for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, must face competition from countries outside this system. This means that, despite the efficiency of the factories here - the result of their investment in technology - the cost of making cement is higher than in those countries that normally also have cheaper labor.
