Catalonia's public works tendering
Drastic drop in official tenderingin Catalonia, with a decrease of 410 million euros compared to the previous year.Public tenders tend to be highly conditioned by the electoral cycle, and the fact that 2020 did not include any call to the polls, produced the usual reduction in investments. Proof of this isthat only the Generalitat -which at the end of the year called elections for February 14, 2021- came close to the figures of the previous year and yet, reduced its tenders by 30 million euros (4% ). On the other end,the central governmentreduced funds for public works by an exorbitant 58%, ending the year with a mere 337 million euros.
Catalonia has been, oncemore, far from the average of 3,750 M€ in the past 20 years, and even more from the5,000 considered necessary to ensure the welfare of citizens and the competitiveness of the economy.
Hopes are that the recently approved EU Next Generation Fundswill make it possible, in subsequent years, to recover investments in infrastructures, many of them linked to environmental, energy and ecological transition projects that define said Funds.
