The situation and evolution of the Catalan cement sector and the main current concerns, together with future actions, were configured as the main contributions of Ciment Català to the meeting between representatives of the Commission for monitoring the use agreement sustainable use of resources, the protection of the environment and people’s health and the improvement of the competitiveness of the cement sector (CASA Catalunya) and a parliamentary delegation of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya. This work session with deputies Jordi Albert and Eugeni Villalbí is part of the round of institutional relations with different parliamentary groups and members of the Government that CASA Catalunya holds with political representatives of the country to ask them to promote policies favorable to the sectors productive of Catalonia. In this sense, and in a context of Circular Economy and protection of the environment and health, reference was made to the importance of using alternative raw materials that allow reducing the consumption of natural resources, the energy utilization of waste for avoid the consumption of fossil fuels and reduce carbon dioxide emissions (the main agent of climate change) by decarbonizing the sector, improvements in the energy efficiency of facilities and permanent control measures for environmental behavior
The meeting served to make a global analysis of the sector, of the legislative threats it faces and of the future opportunities that could make it move forward, highlighting the roadmap to reduce carbon emissions to zero in the 2050 life cycle of cement and its derived products, such as concrete. It was also discussed and insisted on the importance of companies and factories approaching and collaborating with nearby communities with a policy of transparency so that social agents are aware of the contributions that the sector has in many areas and, in particular, in places of quality work within a safe activity for the environment and health.
The representation of CASA Catalunya was headed by the managing director of Fundación CEMA, Dimas Vallina, and formed by trade union and business representatives of the Catalan cement industry, including Ciment Català.
