On May 14, 2019, the Generalitat of Catalonia formally declared a climate emergency. Subsequently, on January 17, 2020, the Climate Action Summit was held, in which Ciment Català already participated. Now, in the strategy for a carbon neutral economy promoted by the Generalitat, the list of companies, institutions and other organizations adhering to the Climate Action Commitments has been published.
As an entity aware that the future of the sector combines economic growth, environmental protection and social responsibility, Ciment Català has formally adhered to 7 of the commitments on this list, being one of the first 10 social and economic agents that has formalized the aforementioned adhesion.
The purpose of the initiative is for Catalonia to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050. For this reason, the organizations that voluntarily join commit to carrying out actions that include deepening their knowledge of the climate impact of their activity, the dissemination and the promotion of climate commitment in your organization, the promotion of the energy transition of your activity, the reduction of the climate impact of the mobility it generates, the progressive adoption of the principles of the circular economy or the implementation of a training program on economics circular and climate emergency for union leaders and cadres, among other objectives.
Catalonia emits 45 million tons of CO2 equivalent, approximately 1% of all emissions generated by Europe. Although they have managed to reduce by 23% compared to 2005, when emission reduction measures began to be taken, this is not enough. The challenge of further reducing the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and curbing global warming, entails introducing significant changes in the socio-economic and productive model, and a demanding task of raising awareness and monitoring. Hence the need to set these commitments publicly and in writing.
