As a representative entity of the sector and defender of the contributions of the industry in terms of activity and quality jobs, Ciment Català has been working intensely for months on institutional relations with different parliamentary groups and members of the Government to request the promotion of policies favorable to the productive sectors of Catalonia. One of the last contacts in the Parliament, during the months of February and March, has been with the Junts per Catalunya (JuntsxCat) group, represented by its deputies Joan Canadell and Salvador Vergés.
The harmony in the approaches has presided over these meetings. On the part of Ciment Català, it was stated that there are various parliamentary initiatives that can very seriously affect industrial sectors (and in particular the cement sector) and put them at risk of continuity. In this sense, the examples of taxes that imply tax duplication, limitations on activities that are essential to achieve climate neutrality and are safe for health and the environment, or other initiatives directly contrary to the maintenance and continuity of century-old industries in the territory. The sectoral delegation warned of the risk of relocation of production to other autonomous communities, countries or economic areas.
For their part, the JuntsxCat deputies recognized that the legislation emanating from the Parliament and the Government should be the first step in this essential line of defense for the industry. Both parties insisted on the necessary care for health and the environment, which the cement sector always strictly bears in mind in its actions in accordance with current legislation. It was also used to highlight that the possible relocation of the activity implies an increase in the environmental impact both due to the additional transport required and the efficiency of the production facilities.
With the JuntsxCat parliamentarians, it was highlighted that the four cement plants in Catalonia offer jobs to 3,000 employees, 92% of them with indefinite contracts and good salaries, and it is an industry that has carried out its duties at the environment and meets European emissions targets, with a specific roadmap to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 throughout the life cycle of its products.
