The Association of Cement Manufacturers of Catalonia (Ciment Català) and the Department of Territory and Sustainability have extended the validity of the Voluntary Agreement to promote efficiency in the use of resources and the transition towards a circular economy of the sector until July 2025. With the extension of this Agreement makes visible the sustainability commitments of the sector that will promote a greater circularization of the economy and even exceed, in some cases, the measures established in the EU Commission Action Plan for the circular economy and in the sheet route of the circular economy in Catalonia that is being developed. The agreement will also improve public information regarding the environmental impact of member companies.

The Voluntary Agreement, signed on July 6, 2017, committed all companies with an integral cement production factory in Catalonia, grouped in Ciment Català, to a framework of collaboration with the Department of Territory and Sustainability to achieve a high degree of protection of the environment, making it compatible with economic growth. Among the specific agreements of the Convention now extended, it is worth highlighting the commitment to reach a 60% substitution of fossil fuels with alternative fuels based totally or partially on biomass, with the corresponding effect of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This measure will also contribute to the policies and strategies established to increase the recovery of waste.

The 4 companies associated with Ciment Català represent 19% of the total cement produced in Spain and generate a thousand jobs. These companies will promote measures to favor the transition of the sector towards a circular economy; they will collaborate in improving public information regarding the impact of their factories; they will contribute in the realization of technical and economic studies on the interrelation between the cement industry and the environment; and they will cooperate with the Administration in the application of programs and policies for the improvement of air quality.
